We Showed Up in Puerto Rico — And So Did the Community

How Kosmopolite Disaster Response partnered with The Home Depot Foundation, ToolBank USA, and Team Rubicon to create lasting spaces for children across the island.
At Kosmopolite Disaster Response, we believe that recovery doesn't end when the debris is cleared. Sometimes, the most powerful act of service is helping a community reclaim the spaces where its children laugh, learn, and grow.

This past winter, that belief took shape in Puerto Rico — and the results are 13 picnic tables and 13 sturdy benches now anchored across multiple Boys & Girls Clubs locations, including Loiza and Arecibo.
"Kids now have a place to rest and make memories for years to come."

The Mission Behind the Moment
Boys & Girls Clubs de Puerto Rico has long been a cornerstone of youth development across the island. Their clubs are safe havens — places where children receive mentorship, structure, and community. But like so many nonprofits, their facilities often don't match the scale of the mission they're carrying.
When The Home Depot Foundation approached partners about donating high-quality outdoor patio furniture to several club locations, Kosmopolite was ready to answer the call. We mobilized alongside ToolBank USA, The Home Depot Foundation, and Team Rubicon to make sure this donation didn't just arrive — it was built, installed, and made to last.
A Real Partnership, Real Impact
In collaboration with 50 Home Depot team members and volunteer friends, our team took part in ToolBank USA's Building Change program — a practical team-building effort that transforms donated materials into concrete community benefits.

Here's how it unfolded on the ground:
Teams constructed 13 picnic tables and 13 benches to be placed across various club locations
The furniture was chosen for its durability in Puerto Rico's tropical climate
Clubs in Loiza, Arecibo, and nearby areas now enjoy revitalized outdoor spaces
Prior to this project, many children had limited seating and spent most of their time indoors. Now, they gather outside for games, group activities, and conversations — the informal moments that influence their development.
Why This Work Matters to Us
Kosmopolite was founded on the idea that we are all citizens of the world — that in a moment of crisis or need, geography and circumstance shouldn't determine whether someone gets help. Puerto Rico's communities have faced hurricanes, economic challenges, and infrastructure setbacks that most of us can barely imagine. The Boys & Girls Clubs there have kept showing up for kids through all of it.
Being part of a project that improves those spaces — even in a small way — is exactly why we do this work. We're a small, lean team that scales with community. This project reminded us how much is possible when purpose-driven organizations align around a shared goal. The Home Depot Foundation brought resources. ToolBank brought infrastructure. Team Rubicon brought hands. Kosmopolite brought coordination and commitment.
Together, we built something lasting.
